An authentic historical lead paperweight ingot produced by the legendary ASARCO East Helena Smelter in Montana, one of the most important smelting operations in the American West. Marked "East Helena Plant," this commemorative desk ingot was produced as a presentation or souvenir piece for VIPs, visitors, employees, and associates connected to the operation during the smelter's long industrial history.
Operated by the historic ASARCO (American Smelting and Refining Company), the East Helena smelter began operations in 1889 and remained a major force in American ore processing and metal production for over a century before ceasing operations in the early 2000s. The facility played a major role in processing ore from Montana's prolific mining districts during the height of the American industrial and mining expansion.
These small lead "paperweight ingots" were never ordinary commercial bullion bars, but rather special presentation pieces created as industrial memorabilia and executive souvenirs associated with the smelting operation itself. Today, surviving examples have become increasingly collectible among:
- ASARCO memorabilia collectors
- Montana mining history enthusiasts
- Smelter and refinery artifact collectors
- Industrial Americana collectors
- Western mining memorabilia collections
- Historical desk and executive souvenir collectors
This example displays the classic cast ingot form with crisp "East Helena Plant" lettering and outstanding industrial character. Pieces directly connected to historic American smelting operations are becoming increasingly difficult to obtain as surviving artifacts from major Western industrial sites continue disappearing into private collections.
An excellent museum-style display piece representing over a century of Montana mining and smelting history.
Ex: Billy Williams Collection.
