An authentic specimen of the officially classified Northwest Africa 17859 (NWA 17859) lunar meteorite, a rare feldspathic breccia meteorite originating from the Moon and officially approved in Meteoritical Bulletin 114 in 2025.
This remarkable meteorite represents genuine lunar crustal material ejected from the Moon's surface during ancient impact events before eventually traveling through space and falling to Earth. Lunar meteorites remain among the rarest and most scientifically important extraterrestrial materials available to collectors today.
Why NWA 17859 Is Exceptional
- Officially classified lunar meteorite
- Extremely low total known mass of only 52.7 grams
- Single known stone
- Fresh low-weathering condition
- Polymict lunar breccia structure
- Approved in 2025 — Meteoritical Bulletin 114
Official Classification
- Name: Northwest Africa 17859 (NWA 17859)
- Classification: Lunar (Feldspathic Breccia)
- Year Purchased: 2025
- Total Known Weight: 52.7 grams
- Pieces: Single stone
- Shock Stage: High
- Weathering Grade: Low
- Official Publication: Meteoritical Bulletin 114
Scientific analysis identified a complex polymict lunar breccia composed of: anorthositic clasts, gabbroic anorthosites, troctolitic anorthosites, olivine gabbronorites, impact melt clasts, chromite, ilmenite, Ca-phosphates, and troilite.
The stone reportedly retained minor fusion crust and was purchased in Tucson, Arizona in 2025 by noted meteorite researchers and collectors Roberto Vargas and Ralph Glasser.
Feldspathic lunar breccias like NWA 17859 are believed to originate from the ancient lunar highlands — the heavily cratered primordial crust of the Moon formed during the earliest stages of lunar history.
Ideal For
- Lunar meteorite collectors
- Advanced planetary science collections
- Museum and educational displays
- Investment-grade meteorite collections
- Collectors of rare classified meteorites
- Space exploration enthusiasts
A genuine fragment of the Moon representing one of the rarest categories of natural material available on Earth.
Note: This is likely the only material available to the public, as the main mass holder retains all remaining material.
Measurements & Weight
- Dimensions: 35 x 27 x 0.3 mm
- Weight: 3.9g
Condition
Please review all photos carefully for overall condition, natural texture, brecciation, fusion crust, weathering, and preparation characteristics, as they are considered part of the description. Lunar meteorites are natural extraterrestrial objects and commonly display fractures, brecciated textures, and structural variation caused by ancient impact processes.
