An authentic individual specimen from the officially classified Mohave Mountains meteorite, a rare Arizona L6 ordinary chondrite discovered in 2016 in the Mohave Mountains region northeast of Havasu Heights in northwestern Arizona.

Officially approved and published in Meteoritical Bulletin 106, the Mohave Mountains meteorite represents a small and highly limited Arizona strewnfield with a total known recovered mass of only 613.15 grams spread across just 43 known stones. Material from this meteorite is exceptionally scarce compared to many larger Northwest African and international ordinary chondrite finds.

The meteorite was originally discovered by meteorite hunter Myke Steighler while searching the desert bajadas of the Mohave Mountains region. The stones are noted for their well-developed dark fusion crust and fresh interiors with very low weathering.

Official classification notes describe:

  • Well-developed black to olivine-green fusion crust
  • Fresh white-to-gray interior
  • Evenly distributed metal and troilite grains
  • Low weathering grade W0/1
  • Shock stage S2
  • Recrystallized L6 chondrite texture

Classification:

  • Name: Mohave Mountains
  • Location: Arizona, United States
  • Year Found: 2016
  • Classification: Ordinary Chondrite (L6)
  • Shock Stage: S2
  • Weathering Grade: W0/1
  • Total Known Weight: 613.15 grams
  • Official Publication: Meteoritical Bulletin 106
  • Finder: Myke Steighler
  • Classifier: L. Garvie, ASU

Unlike many heavily weathered desert meteorites, Mohave Mountains specimens are known for their relatively fresh preservation and attractive fusion crust characteristics, making them highly desirable among collectors of Arizona meteorites, official classified meteorites, ordinary chondrites, fresh fusion-crusted individuals, rare strewnfield material, and planetary science specimens.

With only 613 grams total known, Mohave Mountains is an exceptionally limited American meteorite find, and individual specimens are becoming increasingly difficult to obtain.

An outstanding addition to advanced meteorite collections, Arizona geological collections, museum and educational displays, space and planetary science collections, and fusion-crusted meteorite collections.

Condition:
Please review all photos carefully for overall condition, fusion crust, natural weathering, fractures, and surface characteristics, as they are considered part of the description. Meteorites are natural extraterrestrial objects and commonly display irregular surfaces, minor oxidation, and natural desert weathering features.
