An authentic specimen of the officially classified Djoua 001 meteorite, a rare Aubrite achondrite approved in Meteoritical Bulletin 110 in 2022. Recovered in Algeria during 2021, Djoua 001 quickly became one of the more important modern aubrite discoveries due to its unusually coarse crystalline structure, pale coloration, and substantial recovered mass.
Aubrites are among the rarest achondrite meteorites known and are highly prized for their bright enstatite-rich mineralogy and distinctive crystalline appearance. Djoua 001 is especially notable for its exceptionally coarse enstatite crystals, some reaching up to 1.5 cm across.
Official Classification
- Name: Djoua 001
- Country: Algeria
- Region: Illizi
- Year Found: 2021
- Classification: Aubrite (Enstatite Achondrite)
- Shock Stage: Low
- Weathering Grade: Low
- Total Known Weight: 22.51 kg
- Official Publication: Meteoritical Bulletin 110
Physical Characteristics
Official reports describe: pale beige and gray crystalline interior, possible degraded fusion crust remnants, coarse enstatite crystals, sporadic dark and rusty spots, rare visible metallic grains, and unbrecciated crystalline texture.
Scientific Composition
Scientific analysis identified: enstatite, diopside, daubreelite, Ti-Cr-bearing troilite, and Ni-poor kamacite. The meteorite consists primarily of a very coarse-grained enstatite-rich aggregate with remarkably clean crystalline textures that distinguish aubrites from more common meteorite types.
Unlike ordinary chondrites, aubrites are: achondritic meteorites, dominated by enstatite minerals, extremely low in iron oxidation, pale and crystalline in appearance, and exceptionally rare within meteorite collecting.
Ideal For
- Aubrite collectors
- Enstatite achondrite enthusiasts
- Advanced meteorite collections
- Rare achondrite specialists
- Museum and educational displays
- Collectors seeking visually unique meteorites
Depending on preparation, specimens may display: pale crystalline enstatite textures, coarse grain structure, metallic inclusions, polished crystal-rich surfaces, gray and beige mottled appearance, and visible mineral boundaries.
The unusually large crystal size and attractive pale coloration make Djoua 001 especially desirable as a display meteorite among advanced collectors.
A remarkable extraterrestrial artifact representing one of the rarest and most visually distinctive achondrite meteorite classes available today.
Measurements & Weight
- Dimensions: 30 x 18 x 0.2 mm
- Weight: 2.3g
Condition
Please review all photos carefully for overall condition, fractures, oxidation, crystal structure, and preparation characteristics, as they are considered part of the description. Meteorites are natural extraterrestrial objects and commonly display structural variation, weathering features, and natural mineralogical textures.
