A rare and historically significant Bagdad Iron Meteorite from Arizona, officially classified as an Iron, IIIAB meteorite. The Bagdad meteorite is an exceptionally scarce Arizona iron, represented by a single known mass weighing only 2.2 kilograms, making it one of the rarest officially recognized iron meteorites discovered in the state.

Originally found near Burro Creek, west of Bagdad, Arizona, this meteorite was recovered during a mineral collecting expedition and later became part of the renowned Nininger Meteorite Collection at Arizona State University. Additional historical information later confirmed that Don L. Stout and his son discovered the meteorite in 1959 near Red Knob Butte while traveling an old jeep trail.

For collectors specializing in Arizona meteorites, Bagdad represents an opportunity to own material from one of the state's rarest officially classified iron meteorites.

Why Collect Bagdad?

Bagdad is remarkable because only a single meteorite mass has ever been documented. Unlike many Arizona meteorites that are represented by numerous recovered specimens, Bagdad remains known from just one small iron mass, making authentic material exceptionally scarce.

Its association with Arizona's mining history and its preservation within the famous Nininger Meteorite Collection further enhance its historical importance.

Collector Notes

Arizona is recognized as one of the world's premier meteorite-producing regions, and the Bagdad meteorite is among its rarest official iron meteorites. Because the entire recovered meteorite weighed only 2.2 kilograms, specimens available to private collectors are seldom encountered.

This scarcity makes Bagdad an excellent addition to collections emphasizing:

  • Arizona meteorites
  • Historic American meteorites
  • Iron meteorites
  • Officially classified meteorites
  • Rare locality collections

Condition

Please examine all photographs carefully, as they are considered part of the description. Natural iron meteorites commonly display oxidation, regmaglypts, weathering features, saw marks, polishing, or etched surfaces depending on specimen preparation.
